What tirzepatide is

Tirzepatide is a once-weekly injectable medication that acts on two hormone pathways, GIP and GLP-1. Together, these affect appetite, fullness, and blood sugar regulation. Patients often describe feeling satisfied with smaller meals and thinking about food less.

What studies have shown

In a large clinical trial, adults on the highest dose of tirzepatide, combined with lifestyle changes, lost around 20 percent of their body weight on average over about 72 weeks. Results at lower doses were smaller, and individual results varied widely. A trial average is not a promise, and your own response depends on many factors, including your health, habits, and how well you tolerate the medication.

Common side effects

Most side effects are digestive and tend to show up when the dose increases:
