Getting Ready for Botox? Here’s What You Need to Know
If you’ve booked a Botox appointment at TAP MedSpa in Mustang, Oklahoma, you’re already one step ahead. Botox is one of the most popular and effective non-surgical treatments available, and a little preparation goes a long way toward getting the best results. Tanja Pittman DNP APRN CNP has guided hundreds of patients through their first and subsequent Botox appointments. This guide walks you through everything you need to do before and after your visit to make the most of your treatment.
What to Avoid Before Your Botox Appointment
Preparing for Botox starts several days before your actual appointment. Certain substances can increase bruising and bleeding at injection sites, so it’s worth being mindful of what you’re putting in your body in the days leading up to treatment.
Blood Thinners and Supplements
Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and other NSAIDs for at least 3-5 days before your appointment if medically appropriate. These medications thin the blood and increase the likelihood of bruising at injection sites. Similarly, certain supplements including fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and garlic supplements can have blood-thinning effects and are best paused for a few days before treatment. Always check with your prescribing physician before stopping any medication.
Alcohol
Skip alcohol for at least 24 hours before your Botox appointment, and ideally 48 hours. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can increase bruising and swelling. It also dehydrates the skin, which isn’t ideal on treatment day.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Botox Appointment
When you arrive at TAP MedSpa, Tanja will begin with a consultation to assess your facial anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine the appropriate placement and dosage for your treatment. She takes time to explain what she’s doing and why, so you’ll never feel rushed or uncertain.
The treatment area will be cleansed before injections begin. Botox injections are quick — most appointments take between 10 and 20 minutes from first injection to last. The needles used are very fine, and most patients describe the sensation as a small pinch. A topical numbing cream is available if you’re particularly sensitive.
Common treatment areas include the forehead, glabella (frown lines between the brows), and crow’s feet. Tanja may also treat additional areas like the brow lift, lip flip, or neck bands depending on your goals. You can discuss all of this during your visit. See our full Botox service page at tapmedspa.com for more details on treatment areas and pricing.
Aftercare: What to Avoid After Botox
Following the right aftercare routine is just as important as preparation. The first four hours after Botox treatment are especially critical.
Stay Upright for 4 Hours
Avoid lying down or bending forward significantly for at least four hours after your treatment. This helps ensure the Botox stays in the intended area and doesn’t migrate to nearby muscles.
Skip Exercise on Treatment Day
Hold off on strenuous exercise for the rest of the day after your Botox appointment. Exercise increases blood flow and can contribute to bruising and swelling. Light activity is fine, but save the gym session for the next day.
Don’t Touch the Injection Sites
Avoid rubbing, massaging, or pressing on the treated areas for at least 24 hours. Touching the sites can cause the product to shift. You may gently cleanse your face as usual, but skip facial massage or any treatment that applies pressure.
Avoid Heat Exposure
Stay out of saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths for 24 hours after your Botox appointment. Heat can increase swelling and may affect how the product settles. Direct sun exposure is also best avoided on treatment day.
When Will You See Botox Results?
Botox results appear gradually. Most patients start to notice softening of movement in the treated muscles within 3 to 5 days after their appointment. Full results are typically visible at the two-week mark, once the product has fully settled. This is also why Tanja schedules a two-week follow-up: if any touch-up is needed, this is the time to address it.
Results typically last three to four months for most patients. With consistent treatment over time, some patients find their results last longer as the treated muscles gradually weaken. Tanja will discuss your specific timeline during your appointment.
When to Contact Your Provider
Some mild redness, slight swelling, or small bumps at injection sites are completely normal and resolve within a few hours. Bruising is less common but also normal and typically fades within a few days. However, contact TAP MedSpa if you experience unusual asymmetry after two weeks, drooping of an eyelid or brow that wasn’t there before, or anything that concerns you. Tanja is always available to answer questions from her patients.
